Sorry I looked for `American Graffiti` on the www.imbd.com top 250 and I couldn't find it. That's strange seeing as Star Wars was number 9... you would have thought that American Graffiti, if it'd been even half as good, would've at least made it into the top 100.

But nope. If you can find me a list of top films where viewers have rated American Graffiti anywhere near the top 100 then I'd be amazed. Personally it nearly sent me to sleep. I can understand if some people found it quite good but if it were Spielberg who had directed it we'd be putting it to the back of the pile with `The Goonies` wouldn't we.

steven_craig what a load of bollocks.

There's a slight difference between selling Jar Jar Bink fluffy toys and peddling crack cocaine. Why? Because selling crack is illegal, immoral, disgusting and damn right nasty. Selling slightly expensive (compared to what steven_craig?) Jar Jar Binks toys isn?t.

PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE TO BUY ?HIS? WANKY TOYS.

Sir Lucas? most fanatical fans would bust his ass if he didn?t bring out any new merchandise for AOTC. His fans demand it, so as theirs nothing wrong in selling merchandise of this kind, he provides it. To some it may be expensive but you do not have to buy it.

Have some fuckin common sense dumb and dumber?

The Starwars trilogy are superb - Phantom Menace was underrated.

    American Graffiti was awesome too.

His dialogue may be poor and his direction nothing special, but despite this, these films are truely top notch. I don't care if anyone thinks any different, they are simply wrong or passing their misguided opinion as fact.

    wow getting hot in here...

I'm still not hearing reasons why people hate the guy except for the toys and the fact he's only really made one film... its not really the film people like its more what the film did for cinema at the time.

[FACT]: "All films since 1977 have been made in the wake of Star Wars"....

so if children wanted to buy crack from you (because it was in your movie), would you quite happily market it and sell it to them because it's "COMMON SENSE"? - are you (like lucas) willing to screw people in the ass for over priced crap, so that you can produce another shitty movie and make more money out of that one, (the cycle goes on) so the poor get poorer, rich get richer and the dumb get dumber... that is not common sense

Yeah Steve, you kinda did talk out your ass on that one. "are you (like lucas) willing to screw people in the ass for over priced crap"? What in the hell are you talking about? Lucas says, "Hey, here's a toy for 10 dollars. Do you want it?" And people say yes. All people have to do is say no. How is he screwing you? Do you think it's your right as a human being to get Lucasfilm merchandise for a dollar? What in the shit are you talking about? Screwed in the ass indeed.

    Hi ac-01,

Thought it'd be good to get some heat on the go smile
Hate is too strong a word for Lucas... indifference is nearer the mark. Apart from that you hit the nail on the head.
Lucas was the catalyst which brought Star Wars together. Even if the film itself is `slightly` cheesy it doesn't matter because it changed the course of film history. Plus it was a formative part of my childhood and probably a key reason for why I want to make films.

But nearly everyone is agreed that the one thing which sets Star Wars apart from any other cheesy 70's sci-fi was it's fantastic special effects. Strip these effects away and you've got just another `Logans Run`. Just as we sat in awe at `Jurassic Park`... `Star Wars` too sent us to other worlds via startling effects. So really, perhaps more than any other film, the controversy which Star Wars stirred was thanks more to the artists who worked on it than the director.

Proof of this is evident in the fantastic sequal `The Empire Strikes Back` which has to be the best of the original trilogy. This film took the effects even further and it was not directed by Lucas. The lack of Lucas' plodding directorial vision allowed the true potential of Star Wars to shine through.

Now, 20+ years later, Lucas thought he could pull the same stunt again. What did he produce? Stunning special effects work framed within a plodding directorial vision.

I can understand that people respect the man for being the catalyst behind Star Wars (the original only please... don't give him credit for the others he didn't direct) but he has yet to show an ounce of the directorial flare which is often blindly attributed to him.
